BOYS, BOARDS AND BEER

I cut off my last lift pass from last season yesterday morning, only to realize that the last time I went snowboarding was March 23, 2008. Riding again was long overdue, so I grabbed my girl of 18 years, Rebecca, and headed to Mt. Washington. This year's been super warm and dry, so the snowpack took its sweet little time building up, but after seeing that nearly two feet of powder was dumped on the resort this week, I could resist no longer. The Whiskey Jack chair was reserving its energy for last night's speed dating event. I thought that the clear, sunny day would equate to frozen snow in the morning, but all it meant for us was amazing, unobstructed views of the Georgia Straight (including Denman and Hornby Islands). From the minute my board touched the snow, it was nothing but soft white stuff and pockets of powder. By the time noon hits, my body's always ready for some rest. We headed into Fat Teddy's Bar & Grill because a girl's gotta have beer. I cautiously ordered the enchilada (being that I make such wicked ones), but I was pleasantly very surprised. It was tasty and definitely spicy - just the way I like it! (Plus, the caesar salad kinda kicked ass.) Lucky me, I ran into Amy there at lunchtime. She told me she was up snowboarding for the day with a few buddies, but I'm pretty sure she was just trying to pick up hot men. Half-way up the Eagle Chair, we discovered that the legendary "bra tree" exists. Check out the red cups on the branch. I don't know of a single bra I own that I could or would part with for that sake. Days on the hill always go by way too quickly, but beautiful pain of my muscles lasts for days. I've missed the smells and sounds and feeling of being on the hill, so here's hoping I'll get in a few more days before the snow melts and it's time to don a bikini. (That right there is a whole other reason to break out my camera.)

RUN, FIT GIRL, RUN

It has happened. There are moments when I can't actually believe it, but it has happened nonetheless. Between doing it for fun sometimes and making the 3km trek from my office to my gym several times each week, the running bug has officially bit me. Not only do I find jogging doable, I find it enjoyable. Running or... Photo: lgh75 on Flickr Perhaps, though, I should learn to keep my mouth shut in this regard. You see, my beautiful (in many ways) friend Chelsea convinced me to do a 10km with her and her husband at the end of October. Okay, but really, it's only 9.5km and we are encouraged to dress in costume, so I'm sure it'll equate to good laughs and merriment. I have exactly 23 days to train. That being said, I need to start stepping up my game. I've been keeping to a maximum of 4km runs and plan to embark on a longer one this weekend because I know I'm capable. So to you experienced runners out there, offer me your sage advice...

CHEESEBURGERS: THEY DO A BODY GOOD

Me: So did you figure out what to make for dinner? Stephen: Ya, I just took a steak out of the freezer. Me: Yum. Stephen: Doesn't it seem kind of counterproductive to go for a run then go to McDonald's? Me: Not really. As long as I don't eat a bajillion calories there. Stephen: I see. Me: I've been eating it my whole life! Stephen: Haha maybe it's just building up inside of you, ready to give you some kind of disease! Me: What kind of disease? Stephen: All kinds probably. I don't know how you don't feel like dying when you eat it. Me: I feel like dying from the awesomeness on my tongue... Okay so I have never been one to really run. When I started going to the gym three weeks ago, I told my trainer that I'd be totally into weight training but count me out for cardio. I hate it and I pretty much always have. But then something weird happened. The more I worked out, the stronger I became and before I knew it, I wanted to run to the gym. Quelle bizarre behavior! Yup, I've definitely gotten stronger, more toned and very much more Bosworth in the last few weeks. I skipped the gym after work today because I actually felt like going for a run to bust off some stress instead. I started out in Gastown, went up Main Street to Crab Park, all along the waterfront to Waterfront Road, under Canada Place, up through Coal Harbour to the corner of Hastings and Broughton and then back down to Burrard, up to Pender and straight down Pender until I hit the Tinseltown McDonald's. All in, 40 minutes later I had covered 4.63km of territory without stopping once. Not only can I not believe that I actually ran, but did so without stopping. Good tunes (The Pixies, Jay-Z and Daft Punk to name a few) and supportive sneakers are key, it seems. I picked up a great pair of Nike runners at Winner's for only $70 this week, and so far, it's been a wise investment. Another tip: make the trek to Burlington, WA and hit the new Lululemon Factory Outlet. The same outfit that I'd priced at about $150 with tax on Robson Street cost me a mere USD$60 with tax last Saturday. Question for all you runners: Why the heck do I still get that same side cramp that plagued me in elementary school track and field, and how do I get rid of it?

Highlight Of The Day

It seems that being sweaty and joggy is more attractive to men than being dressed-up and strutting. While I oddly got more than my fair share of male attention today, as I jogged past the fire station at Main and Powell, I was greeted by a trio of firefighters who were delighted to wave and wink. Ahhh...rescue me.

Awkward Moment Of The Day

As I was walking home from work, a well-dressed man much shorter than me approached with a puzzled look on his face. Sweetly, I asked if he was lost. He wrung his hands for a brief moment. "Ah, yah, I'm looking for a tall blonde girl...know of any?" I instantly had a flashback to the time Samantha got motorboated, shook my head no and flashed a lovely goodbye smile as I kept on walking.

I LIKE DAYS LIKE THIS

You know those days that are so mellow, yet hold a great deal of anticipation? I know that I have many fun adventures ahead of me in the coming days, while today I am free to relax, do everything at a slower pace and daydream about what's to come. Friends It's been nearly a year - a year! - since my last shopping adventure in the U.S. with Susan, so we're heading down at the break of dawn tomorrow. I don't know if I'm more excited for Nordstrom and Victoria's Secret or for Auntie Anne's Pretzels and IHOP! And following that, I have the SPCA Paws For A Cause Walk and a visit from my mom to look forward to. But today...today will be divine. Once I manage to make it through this work day, I'll spend some time at the gym, followed by black bean and garlic prawns from Noodle Box for dinner, re-watching season 6 of SATC on my laptop in bed and closing my eyes for a divine sleep by 9pm. I find it incredibly odd, but I am not only enjoying going to the gym, but I also look forward to it. I have even started running en route. Forget skinny; this chica is aspiring to Kate Bosworth à la Blue Crush. Bikini season 2009 won't be able to handle me and my soon-to-be surfer-esque bod.

DA BEACH IS DAT WAY

Can you believe I've had this post sitting in my drafts for two days and simply haven't had the time to hit the publish button? Keira-Anne's been a busy girl and working for the weekend. I put in eight hours at the office today and I'll be heading back tomorrow. Anyways, on with the post... One thing I'm really horrible at is making time for "self care" and looking after my own needs. I've been becoming a bit proactive in that area as of late, and one way in which I'm doing it is by flocking to a gym three times a week. surfgirl.JPG Photo: Hulala Retro Surf Wares If you know me, you know how much I despise stationary cardio, so getting me to a gym isn't the easiest task. I've also never been one to set foot on scales - I feel that what's more important than a number is the way we feel about our bodies and our health. However, being that I now consider myself to have both a winter passion and a summer passion, I owe it to myself to get into tip top strength and sculpt my physique for the better of the sport. A few weeks ago, I signed up at one of Vancouver's women-only gyms and love it a whole lot more than the torrid affair I had with Fitness World a few years ago. Being in an environment without testosterone virtually eliminates the intimidation factor, and I can feel comfortable sweating like a pig with my baggy pants hanging off my ass without a care in the world. I've started an intense 12-week circuit training group, and a full-body diagnosis is taken prior to the program and then again after the program. My starting specs are as follows... Age: 27 Height: 5'8.5" (I could've sworn I was 5'9") Weight: 135.00 lbs Body Fat: 21.2% Lean Body Muscle Mass: 78.8% Total Body Water: 35.4 litres (crazy, hey?) I have to be honest - I'm surprising even myself with the momentum and excitement I feel about bringing regular exercise into my life. It seems like the exercise craze is becoming contagious.
