Wellness Wednesday: Arborvitae Essential Oil for Stress Support

Arborvitae essential oil is known for its preservation properties, but has also become my go-to for stress support.

When I was a little girl, my Opa lived in a house far outside of town. Behind his home was an expansive garden and, beyond that, a stand of trees leading into a dense forest. One of my favourite things to do, no matter how I felt, was take his hand and go for one of our famous “nature walks.” That man was my best friend in my whole wide world.

Whether it was his peaceful presence or the rejuvenation I felt being immersed in such natural beauty, I don’t know. It was probably a combination of both, but as a little girl who dealt with a lot of stress that became anxiety as I became an adult, spending time with him on those nature walks was probably the best thing for me.

You may not know it from his faux look of annoyance, but he was the happiest and goofiest man I knew.

Fast forward a few decades. The truth is that I still deal with anxiety and stress and, while I do my best to manage them and keep both at bay, there are times when they creep up on me. One such time happened only a few months ago when I arrived at an acupuncture appointment.

I was honest with Dr. Gee and told her right away that I was feeling a lot of anxiety, and felt I needed to “bring it all down a bit,” so to speak. She knowingly winked at me as she often does and told me she thought she had just the thing.

Dr. Gee unscrewed the cap on a tiny bottle of essential oil and handed it to me to smell. The truth? The scent instantly overwhelmed me to the point it just about knocked me on my butt – literally. The link between scent and memory has been scientifically proven to be quite overwhelming, and in that moment I was transported right back to one of my nature walks with my Opa.

Arborvitae Essential Oil

Arborvitae essential oil is derived from the Canadian Arborvitae tree, and in it I could smell the clean cedar-like scent as well as the earth and moss in which it grew. Arborvitae trees were used extensively by our First Nation people for health benefits but also for building vessels, weaving baskets and clothing, or carving totem poles.

With Arborvitae essential oil you can:

  • inhale during stressful moments for a sense of calm
  • diffuse it during meditation or yoga for grounding
  • protect against environmental or seasonal threats
  • purify the air and repel insects in the home by diffusing
  • apply to wrists and ankles while hiking
  • preserve wood when mixed with a bit of lemon oil

I feel it’s so important to find support for stress in ways that are natural, healthy, and truly wholesome. Known as the “tree of life,” arborvitae essential oil is a huge powerhouse in a little bottle, and I’m never without it. Often I will place a drop between my palms, rub them together, and inhale. The oil provides an instant emotional lift.
