Get the G11. The G7/8/9 are great, but Canon decided to continually increase the pixels captured on the same sized sensor, leading to a lot of noise (grain). You will notice that the G11 is only 10 MP.

This camera will fit in your purse, not your pocket. It’s a bit bigger in size than the SD1000, but takes better photos and has ‘manual’ control of the shutter speed, aperture, and focus. The noise levels are reasonable low, and it is decent for those night time shots or concert shots when you don’t want a flash. It also has a hot shoe for a flash (I recommend the 220EX).

Lastly, check the lens of your SD1000 and consider a cleaning. This will likely fix any auto-focus problems you’re having.

I also can vouch for the Canon G series. I have a G9 which I bought in 2008 and it’s totally fantastic. Very compact, durable, (made out of metal!) full manual capabilites along with very easy to use auto and program modes. The video recording is excellent for a digital camera, too. A friend of mine recently got a G11 and I’m not totally sold on the changes they’ve made but she’s liking it. This is a camera you can probably keep for years and years, and upgrade with more powerful lenses or a real flash if you want. Thanks for all the feedback, everyone. You guys gave me a lot of great ideas, so I need to do a bit of research now. I’ll definitely let you know what I end up going with!

I would recommend what John said The P6000 from Nikon, mainly because I’ve seen it in action and like what it can do! I’m a canon person myself though

Just remember a dSLR can be a burden to carry around. I don’t see you bringing it out on girl nights and such so something smaller, more compact I think would work better.

I’m game for hoops it’s been a while since I’ve played but it is fun! I’m not a complete stranger right? lol

The G11 is amazing. It is what the pros use to set up their shot and it’d be the last camera you would ever have to purchase. Well, that is the line they used on my sister. Who just purchased one. And loves it.

By the way, the photos you have now look great. I’d ditto Andrew’s comment and say ‘Just save your bling. More moolah for NYC!’

May I suggest you get what our friend, Miss 604 uses (thanks to a reco from me), the Nikon P6000 which is comparable to the Canon G11 mentioned above.

It’s around $300 and has a ton of great features. It’s the closest thing Nikon makes in a point and shoot form factor with the quality and functions of a DSLR…it’s also what I carry with me when I don’t want to lug my DSLR around.

I say save your money…the camera you have takes great pics…anyting other than the big leap to a DSLR won’t be worth it. (staying with Canon, especially if your a mac user-the Canon 7D-will be the last Camera you buy.)
I don’t think you would notice any difference in your photos if you get something slightly different and you’ll just be carrying around something bigger. Probably not the rec. you where hoping for but….a camera you know before a big trip…will be a camera you love….More loot$ for NYC!

damn, the G11 is pretty good too… Not sure what the difference is between the two. I’d have a look at it in store before buying on-line though…
