There is one thing I know for sure that women today do not have enough of. Other women. I’ve spent much time over the last several days thinking, talking, learning, inspiring, instigating, gaining insight and pondering how important friendships are among women. There is a lot of strength and love to be found there, penultimate only to the strength and love we need to seek within ourselves. Remembering to take care of one’s self is a daily necessity and yet something that we seemingly need to be reminded of each day.
After work, I skipped down Main Street with my friend Kortney to meet up with Phaedra and take in a yoga practice. I’ve needed to get back into it for a long time, but I wanted to avoid two things: 1) high membership fees; and 2) the pretentiousness and competitive nature of 99% of yoga studios in downtown Vancouver. Last week, Phaedra discovered Radha Yoga and Eatery in Chinatown.
“radha yoga & eatery offers yoga in a beautiful studio room, consciously-created vegan food in the restaurant, and art & music events for inspiration…radha is a sacred space that embraces people, art and culture. Community is supported and all spiritual traditions are valued. In Eastern mythology Radha flees ordinary life to be with her divine lover, who calls with his mystical flute. “Radha” means cosmic love. At radha you are invited to taste nourishment on all levels.”
I spent a little over an hour clearing my mind of the day’s mud puddles while simultaneously realizing each and every instance I came across for what it was. To further explain how my yoga practice affected me is really pointless because it’s something that really needs to be experienced in every aspect to be fully understood.
After yoga, we nourished our bodies at The Foundation at Main Street and 7th Avenue. It was too tasty to be believed.

I so enjoyed this evening. And you summed it up perfectly.
Awww… I wish I had been able to join you guys, but apparently this was an all-gals night
(although you were definitely in my neighbourhood, I live barely 10 blocks away from The Foundation). I was at the Evening of Green Web 2.0, though. It was really fun.
We’ll have to organize another night out!
There is such a plethora of pretentious, overpriced studios in this city…I think it’s what got me away from practicing yoga in a class environment regularly, myself. It’s awesome that you ladies found a good studio.
And I think you’re absolutely right about the strength and love to be found in friendships between women.
Sounds like a wonderful evening, and glad you got to explore another neighbourhood as well.
in which i love the placement of r in “centre”
I’ve never experienced yoga but it’s something that really appeals to me and one day I’m going to give it a whirl.
Your posts are so uplifting and positive.
(I’m here, searching out that gorgeous creature whose picture I spotted on your Facebook blog promo)
so how do you girls feel about a dude in yoga class?
i really want to join my local-socal-yoga-studio but i think it’s 100% women and i am hesistant about crashing the party.
thoughts?
also, while i’m new to yoga, i look like a hot piece of ass in a pair of sweatpants….if that matters
I say go for it! There were a few guys in the class I attended a couple nights ago. I think it all comes down to the type of studio you practice at. As I said, at least in Vancouver, many of the studios have an air of pretentiousness and competitive spirit among those practicing. “Look at me…I can stretch deeper than you!” You know, that sort of thing. I don’t want this to sound judgmental against those who do practice in, say, Yaletown, because everyone has an entitlement to practice yoga. However, if you find a studio where all those attending have similar goals in the practice, in that they all want to benefit in mind, body and spirit, you’ll find the studio to be that much more open and inviting to all that attend. Good luck!
