A little over two weeks ago, as we sat on the ferry bound for the Island, Amy asked me “want to go and see ‘Juno’ when we’re back in the city?” My instant reply was yes; partially because I had heard it was a great movie, and partially because I knew that Michael Cera was in it, and he’s too cute for his own good.
We were both excited to learn, upon returning to Vancouver, that it was showing at Fifth Avenue Cinemas. Friday seemed to be the day that worked best for both of us, so after a quick trip to Westbeach to scope out boards, we made our way a block up Burrard and handed over our pre-purchased tickets.
The only thing I knew about ‘Juno’ was that it was premised on a teenage girl who had big decisions to make after getting knocked up. What I was delighted to find out was that it was smartly written, funny, intelligent and warm with a lot of soul. There was more than a handful of great performances in this locally-shot film, in particular those by Allison Janney and Ellen Page. I’d hate to spoil any part of the plot for you, so I’ve included the trailer below.
What made me and Amy’s “date” even sweeter was the fact that our tickets only cost us $9 instead of $12. Amy and I both have memberships through Festival Cinemas. For an annual fee of only $12, membership entitles you to discounted tickets at the box office 365 a year, as well as free upgrades on pretty much anything you want at the concession. And the best part? Your membership is valid at Fifth Avenue Cinemas [map], The Park Theatre [map] and The Ridge Theatre [map]. To learn how you can snag your own membership card, click here.

I used to have a membership, and loved going there.
It has been such a long time since I went to the theatre to see a movie. Nothing has really been a ‘must see’, although this one sounds interesting.
This is the first movie that I’ve been too in a long time where the majority of the audience clapped at the end. It is a very heartwarming film that I can’t wait to see again. And Michael Cera is seriously amazing.
Hooray for memberships to quaint old theatres!
Fifth Ave. always seems to have the best selection of movies. This one was no exception. It was a really well written, well acted film that everyone should see. Ellen Page was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance which I think is well deserved.
And yes Micheal Cera is cute.

(But I don’t think I mean that in the same way you do
Micheal Cera is one awesome actor. Loved his performance in Super Bad.
Bunch of my friends went to see Juno when I went skiing. Now I need to find people that haven’t seen the movie to go watch it with me…
It is funny that you say you and a friend went to see Juno on that Friday. My roomate Lesley and I also went that evening to see it- at fifth ave!!! She was super cynical about what it was going to be like (I almost ended up flying solo that eve) , but i told her that I saw several previews and heard the script was quite witty and finally convinced her to go…. We laughed throught the entire film- it was so very comical!
That lil actress was great:0)
It even brought back a lot of memories from high school in some regards.
Too bad I never ran into you, though to tell you the truth- what would I say? “I read your blog- it’s cool” ? Lame huh? hahaha
