WANTON WEDNESDAYS: WEEK 1

Me: “I am totally drawing a blank - I don’t know what to blog about.

Friend: “Write about sex, duh.

Me: “I considered that. I just need to narrow the scope.

Friend: “Talk about lesbian tendencies.

Me: “Ugh. I have none.

Friend: “Perfect!

But it’s an excellent topic of choice. However, that conversation was a few hours ago and I have yet to narrow my scope, so I’m not going to. Sex is a topic I’ve always been comfortable with and have actually enjoyed discussing. Sexual politics and human sexuality are driving forces behind so much of everything in our lives yet it’s something that so many people shy away from opening their mouths about (pun intended).

That being said, I’ve got a thought. Why not a whole series on coitus and consumation and the many facets of fornication? Let’s call it “Wanton Wednesdays,” shall we? There’s no time like the present to begin, so hang on to your knickers because here we go…

Week 1: TALK AIN’T CHEAP, HONEY

Has this post already made you uncomfortable? I’m willing to bet that at least 50% of you are vexed by the picture I’ve posted below simply because of the connotations it could make. Our attitude towards sex and sexuality is conditioned from a time that goes back further than each of us can recall in our own lives. Sometimes it’s based in a strict upbringing or the result of religious influence and for some, the idea of sexuality is one that doesn’t cause a single eyelash to bat. I consider myself lucky in that sex was never a taboo topic in my parents’ household, all the while I most certainly had friends who’d gasp in a mix of shock and horror at the very mention of that three-letter word.

Why is it that you’re squirming in your seat? In terms of sexuality, I think that open discussion and education are your two wisest weapons. Opening up your mind to something that is a very tangible reality of life and being smart about it really should not be overlooked. And don’t mistake me here…I am not simply talking about intercourse; I’m referring to, but not limited to, our attitudes, views on sex, views of ourselves, our individual sexuality (because I hate to break it to you, but yup, you’re a sexual being), sex in the media, our bodies, our perceptions and our ideals. Truth be told, I could probably blog about a different aspect of sex every single Wednesday for the rest of my blogging “career” and never run out of things to talk about.

That being said, this is what Week 1 is all about. From here, I open it all up to you. If you’re uncomfortable with the topic, be frank and say so. If you’re open to discussion, share away. Feel free to comment on topics you’d like to see covered and I’ll open up the floor over the next few weeks, depending on the response to this. I think that if everyone has a little bit more understanding and a little bit more knowledge with which to equip themselves, each of us will be that much stronger. It’s essential to building a healthy view of yourself as a person, as a sexual person and as someone with a strong self-image. Sex is not a negative concept!

we are friends because of sexual slander… or joking. hahah. oh man, time to get back to studying.

random quote from a not so random guy

There is hardly anyone whose sexual life, if it were broadcast, would not fill the world at large.

Sex is awesome! I treat it a little differently than most though. Before I continue…I am not in any way, shape, or form saying my way is best, it’s just my way. If I’m single, I’m celibate. I have been single for 8 years next month, been celibate for 8 1/2 (part of the reason I’m single ;p). People either look at me like I’m crazy, or they flat don’t believe me. It is really that extraordinary?? It is just that for me, it is the emotional closeness with someone that makes it good. I just cannot do it with some random guy. So as long as double AA batteries don’t go away anytime soon, I’ll be alright til the next sweet guy comes along!! :)

Ok, so I would SO totally write a really long comment, but here is my initial reaction. If week 1 is about “let’s talk about sex” then I’ll have to confess that I am always very open about sex, my own sexuality and the frequency of sex in my life (which unfortunately has not been the case these past few weeks, but that’s the topic for another week I guess). I find that many people tend to feel uncomfortable talking about sex. (I am hoping this is still at the level of appropriateness!) In short, I think that it’s a nice idea that you decided to talk about sex on the blog, because I believe that’s one of the biggest issues we have: we don’t communicate well our needs. If we talked to our partners, we’d have a better time I think. My 2 cents.

wow i left the ‘tamale’ and ‘enchilada’ wall comments before even seeing this. you are SO saucy. remind me to tell you that again tomorrow too ;)

Allthough they still have a ways to go… It can be said that interacial relationships, gay and lesbian relationships and even transgendered relationships are all crossing the taboo line and becoming an acceptable part of the main stream edges. (Amen to that)

It can also be said that, allthough these are acceptable things to a new generation… the previous generation will never accept them and might even believe that its a sign of society going down the tubes.

So here’s my topic suggestion…

What’s the next great taboo to be broken? Better yet, what sexual deviance, if any, would you never personally accept as part of the main stream fringe.

Toonaphilia?
Coprophilia?
Papaphilia?
Chucknorrisphilia? (Ok i made that one up)

Hey my first comment here, been lurking for a while (sorry)…

I love this Sex Wednesday things, Wednesday is such a blah day good way to make it interesting.

I thought I was comfortable with sex and sharing things but I really don’t think I AM because I haven’t been asked about it, the topic doesn’t come up enough in a serious light. I personally want to change that but don’t know where to start without conversation turning crass and humorous.

I guess that’s all I have to say about it for now:)

Traisas

great idea! …I look forward to reading more :) AND you’ve given me a good idea of something to blog about myself haha Thanks!

Keira-Anne

Wow…great response so far everyone! I’m totally excited about this idea and I think it’s a really important one. As Krista said, it’s often difficult to discuss sex without the conversation turning crass, but this is what I am endeavouring to do. I want this to be educational, informative, appropriate but fun! Provoking discussion is always a good start…

i am a freelance writer and one of my writing interests is writing erotica. in the past have had publications in a (considered) hardcore magazine.

its funny how people read you into your work. i like pushing the envelope, to use a tired term. even if some of you is there, generally it is you on imagination steroids.

i think the tough thing about being a woman is coming into your own sexuality with a man who is along side you.

there are so many either negative or positive labels for women and seemingly few negative for men. only when you reach your 30’s as a woman do i really think you understand who you are enough to know what you need.

it comes down to you: not to culture or perception or anything. you and the person you touch in the night when no one else is around. nothing else matters.

Ryan

How can I not but grin at your new line of discussion for Wednesdays!? I am thoroughly looking forward to each and every edition. Sex shouldn’t be something we shy away from… Like Keira I know way to many people that are uncomfortable with the topic… and why should they be? It was created to be a beautiful act between people…excellent… let the sex talk begin :)

Kristy

What a great idea Keira!
Sex is something that a lot of people seem to shy away from in conversations, well unless it’s at the bar and the table is full of men, but then at that it is not in anyway educational, informative or even appropriate!

I will look forward for Wednesdays to roll around now!!
