This is my friend Darren. Darren works as a groomer at Mt. Washington, and when I arrived there this morning, not only were the lifts not yet open, Darren hadn’t finished grooming the tube park. This equated to me getting the chance to ride in the groomer with him for a few minutes. It’s interesting for sure but a little scary when you push snow to the point where you’re teetering on a 50 foot drop when in a big, heavy machine. But that’s besides the point. Darren is rad and I was stoked to see him.
That isn’t, however, the only reason I was feeling stoked all day. Today was only my second time snowboarding this season (and fourth time overall - ever), and I reached a lot of major milestones in my snowboarding skill development. They are as follows:
1) I figured out that I am regular, and not “goofy” as was previously suspected;
2) I rode to the top of the Eagle Express (formerly known as the blue chair), which I hadn’t even done when I was a two-planker;
3) I rode to the top of the Sunrise Quad, also which I hadn’t even done as a two-planker;
4) I grasped the concept of using my back foot as a rudder and weight to steer myself when going straight down the hill;
5) I can much more easily ride all the way to the base of the lift, even on the flat parts, without unstrapping one foot or removing my board completely to walk the last bit; and
6) My proudest moment when I made my first turn onto my TOE EDGE (yes, you read that correctly) and then back onto my heel edge without bailing!
My body is a little sore and stiff, though not as much as last time. My knees aren’t nearly as battered because there was a foot of fresh powder. Yes, a foot of fresh powder. The drive up was too treacherous so I left my truck at the chain-up area and bussed up with my dear old friend Rebecca (whom I hadn’t seen since the summer after high school graduation). But for now, I’m too tuckered out to write anything more.
It was rad.

Oh Keira! Your post brought a big smile to my face! First because you are so all about mt washington these days, and I guess because I’m living through you! Every single memory of those trips to the wash. are treasured so deeply. I’m so happy to hear that you are not only a snowboarder now, but also trying things that you never tried before as a dorky skier (yes my friend, I am still a 2 planker ;( ) Oh man, I really wish I could come up with you and just battle it out with the mountain.
Ah! I love the memories…
skiing, and trying things you are so freaking scared of… making it through (alive)
and then going back to the lodge for some frenchfries and other great greasies.
